Soccer Teaches Life to Bethany Senior Amanda Anderson

“Well-rounded” is the word to describe Bethany University senior Amanda Anderson.

She is involved at Twin Lakes Church in Aptos and on the school worship team, all while playing her third and final season on the Bethany women’s soccer team.

Before her time at Bethany, Anderson attended Beyer High School in Modesto, where her team won the league championship all four years. After high school, she spent a year at Modesto Junior College, where she started to play in the off-season until she signed with Bethany in the spring.

Anderson has been flexible on the field while at Bethany. She started her sophomore season as a forward, moved to stopper and now plays midfield.

“Soccer has taught me how to be disciplined,” she said. “I have expanded my beliefs by learning that our minds try to set limits on what we can do, but truly, our bodies can do so much more.

“I have learned that the best things in life are things we fight for. I have learned how to be a better leader, communicate and to build relationships.”

Learning through the game she loves has given Anderson the tools to succeed on and off the field.

“Amanda is a coach’s dream,” coach Abby Garalde said. “She is a hard worker who brings her all every single day.”

Anderson also has had a chance to play alongside her sister, sophomore Bre Anderson, who plays defense on the team.

“It’s nice having someone who truly knows you and how you feel. … We get to build each other up daily with encouragement,” Amanda Anderson said. “We for sure know how to get each other pumped up for a game.”

Anderson will graduate from Bethany with a degree in communications.

“My most memorable moment was getting a hat trick (three goals in one game), each with a different body part: my head, my left foot and my knee.” Anderson said.

She is also fond of the many trips that the team has taken, as well as team worship and devotional times.

“Amanda is an amazing leader and soccer player,” teammate and co-captain Monica O’Daniels said. “She brings great enthusiasm to the team. She’s always the first to start a run and the first to finish. She is a great person to lead the team along side with.”

Four games remain in conference play, where Bethany holds a 1-4 record. Anderson said she hopes the team “will finish strong and continue to enjoy the game of soccer.”

Bethany soccer falls to Jessup

Despite a first-half goal that netted Bethany University the lead at halftime, William Jessup University overpowered the Bruins, 4-1, in California Conference play on Oct. 9.

The first half of the game was controlled by Jessup’s offense, but Bethany freshman goalie Tianna Wehby made more than 13 saves, including at least four diving stops, before halftime.

“Tianna is amazing in the air,” coach Nate Shipley said. “She gets her hands on anything that comes towards her.”

Wehby also had help from a strong backline of defenders, including Monica O’Daniels and Hannah Wiesner.

The only real opportunity for Bethany to score in the first half was in the 42nd minute, when sophomore Justine Wilson got her feet on a corner kick from freshman Sierra Licata 15 yards from the goal and nailed the ball into the left side of the net. The goal gave Bethany a 1-0 lead at halftime.

“I pushed up into the box, and the ball just dropped in front of me and I kicked it in,” Wilson said. “We need to possess a little more even when tired, stick through the whole game, work the whole 90 minutes.”

Ten minutes into the second half of play, Jessup sophomore Elli Tremblay evened the score with a header into the net from a corner kick by freshman Dallas Butterfield.

After more aggressive, back-and-forth play from both teams, Jessup junior Lyndsey Cesena came in from the left side and scored, making the score 2-1.

On Jessup’s third goal, Wehby went to the ground fighting to keep the ball out of the net before sophomore Hekla Goodman and junior Gabby Leon worked to give Jessup a two-goal advantage. Tremblay scored Jessup’s fourth goal with only minutes remaining.

“Fatigue was a factor, and the mental game took a hit with William Jessup’s first goal,” Shipley said. “Overall, our desire to do well at home showed in the level of play by the girls.”

The win for Jessup moved that team to 3-0 in conference and dropped Bethany to 1-3.

Growing Up at the Net

Feigles talks with coach Reed Duffus during practice. Lucjan Szewczyk/Press-BannerToday, Bethany University senior Kim Feigles is the women’s volleyball team captain. But the honor didn’t come easily for Feigles, who overcame many obstacles before finding success on the court.

Feigles, the only senior on this year’s squad, grew up in Shingle Springs. Her passion for volleyball started in middle school, but she hit a brick wall when she failed to make the team.

The frustration pushed her to work hard, however, and she made the team at Ponderosa High School as a freshman. In four years, she proved herself to her peers and coaches and became a team captain as a senior.

Fast forward to the present.

Kim is now a senior in college, majoring in business. She has played on the university’s volleyball team all four years, stepping up to the role of captain during her junior season.

“Over the past four seasons, Kim has evolved from a wide-eyed, ‘go-to’ freshman to the contributing senior leader and steadying influence on and off the court for her teammates,” coach Reed Duffus said. “Along the way, she has selflessly adjusted to positional changes and new teammates, balanced her academic and various leadership roles on campus and has embraced her role as the senior co-captain.”

The past two years, Feigles has led the team, demonstrating her skills on the court and leading by example. Her actions on and off the court have proven to teammates that she is a leader and mentor.

“I feel like it’s been a roller coaster — we’ve had good and bad years,” Feigles said. “Each year is completely different, because of the different mix of girls.”

Her goals this year include a top-three finish in conference and a shot at the Cal-Pac championship.

With eight games remaining, the team is 2-2 in the Cal-Pac and prepping for the conference tournament in November.

Feigles’ advice for future players is to go into the game with an open mind, as well as a willingness to change and grow. After her final season, Feigles said she’d love to coach, but she is unsure at what level — if she decides to do so.

“I enjoy coaching, but not as much as I enjoy playing,” she said
